About us
The Bake House is located in the historical riverside town of Wivenhoe in Essex, where it regularly attracts high praise from it clients & food critics alike.
As the name suggests The Bake House was once the village bakery & to this day charred beams are still visible where the bread ovens used to be located. However, going further back some of the beams have been dated to 1437 and at some point in the buildings history it was also a jail and police station.
Owners Sue Harris & Simon Hirst have created a perfect informal dining environment, suitable for any occasion. All the food is freshly prepared on the premises to a high standard, and the emphasis is on only the best of local & East Anglian seasonal produce.
With this emphasis on fresh, seasonal produce, the popular restaurant has seen business improve substantially. But not wanting to rest on their laurels, the menu changes monthly to take advantage of local produce with the addition of a Set Menu for those on a smaller budget. This offers diners the choice of something simpler for everyday dining or the full A La Carte for those wishing to take full advantage of the chefs culinary expertise.
The wine list is also created with the same loving care as the menu with choices from New & Old world classics to something new and exciting and left field, either by the glass or by the bottle but with prices that will not break the bank.
To the rear of the building is a terrace with tables, chairs which can be used for alfresco dining, all complemented by flowering baskets and troughs.
